PR03SMI from Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades
The official PR03SMI route starts at Vista do Rei, follows the southwest side of the Sete Cidades ridge and finishes beside São Nicolau church in the village. Azores Trails lists it as a 7.5-kilometre linear walk with an easy grade and an average time of two hours.
The scenery remains focused on the interior of the caldera, its lakes and volcanic formations. Near the end, the route joins the road toward Sete Cidades. The official description warns that this inclined section can be slippery, so the easy grade should not be read as a promise of dry or effortless footing.
PR04SMI from Mata do Canário
PR04SMI begins near Mata do Canário on the eastern side of the Sete Cidades ridge. The official route follows the Muro das Nove Janelas aqueduct, climbs through cryptomeria forest toward Pico da Cruz and continues around Lagoa Azul before joining the descent into the village.
Azores Trails lists the walk as linear, medium difficulty, 11.7 kilometres and about three hours. It is longer and more committing than PR03SMI, with greater exposure to the ridge and a longer transport problem if you leave a car near the start.
Parking and arranging the linear return
Parking near Vista do Rei or Mata do Canário is only the beginning of the logistics. Both official routes finish in Sete Cidades village, so an unattended car remains above or beyond the finish. Arrange a second vehicle, confirmed taxi or transfer before starting rather than hoping transport will be available after the walk.
Use signed or clearly permitted spaces without blocking roads, gates or agricultural access. Conditions and restrictions around mountain starts can change. Follow current signs on the day and leave enough room for other vehicles to turn safely.
Use the official trail map and save it offline
The official Azores Trails page for each route provides a description plus downloadable GPS, map and leaflet resources. Open the current route page before departure, check any status notice and save the map or track to a device that works without mobile coverage.
A downloaded file is a backup, not permission to leave the marked trail. Keep your phone charged, follow the official waymarks and avoid shortcuts across pasture or unstable slopes. The route links below are more useful for navigation than a generic map centred on the lakes.
Weather and visibility on the caldera rim
The ridge is exposed to Atlantic wind, cloud and showers even when Ponta Delgada is bright. Check the current local forecast and visible conditions shortly before setting out. Poor visibility removes useful visual references and can make an otherwise straightforward ridge feel much less comfortable.
Postpone the walk when wind, heavy rain or cloud makes the exposed section unsafe for your group. Do not leave the marked route to chase a clearer view. Conditions lower in the village may be calmer, but that does not reduce the exposure on the approach.
What to carry for a Sete Cidades hike
Wear shoes with dependable grip and carry water, a waterproof shell, a charged phone and the official route file saved offline. Add sun protection because exposed weather can change from cloud to strong light quickly. Pack enough food for the chosen distance rather than relying on a stop appearing at the right time.
Tell someone which trail you are walking and when you expect to finish. Keep to the markers, close gates behind you and protect the pasture and planted areas beside the path. Build extra time beyond the official average if your group takes frequent photo stops.
When a guided hike is the better choice
Choose self-guided walking only when you are comfortable judging ridge weather, following the marked route and solving the linear return. PR03SMI is the shorter official option, while PR04SMI offers the longer eastern ridge approach from Mata do Canário.
A guided hiking tour is a different product rather than a paid version of the same article. The available lead experience includes pickup, transfers, a picnic, trekking poles and a broader day connecting several volcanic locations. It makes sense when support and transport matter more than walking one official trail independently.
